 Gölge Etme Exhibition and Performance

Hello, I am Burçak Konukman. I am invited to Sinopale 8 by Beral Madra and I came to Sinop. Subject is Hospital Sea. Sinopale 8 takes place with the frame of “upcycling”. So I decided to re-transform the performance of “2 in 1 Together”, which I had previously worked on for Sinopale 8. At the moment, I live and work in Germany. In recent years, I have started my sculpture and status performance series in Germany, this time I realized the idea in Sinop. For me Sinopale 8 was kind of Artist in Residency Program.

I spent approximately 3 months in Turkey. Then, in January, I was in Sinop again for a 3-week period. In my first period, I photographed the statues and sculptures in Sinop. I picked a few points for that. I took these photos with my polaroid machine. You can see these photos as a presentation in this exhibition. Within the scope of this project, I actually visit the statues and work to inform me of these statues.  In many places, sculptures appear as status or as a monument in cities, and each sculpture has a story on the one hand, and when I actually go somewhere, when I go to a new city, first of all I look at how the statues are placed. I’ve been following the stories these statues are telling me. These follow-ups inform me where I am. Actually, that’s how I inform myself. In this exhibition, Diogenes sculpture at the entrance of the city is also located at the entrance of the exhibition. Then the Tarzan Kemal statue, which I came across as the opening of the sculpture, and the Ataturk Statue right next to the Sinop castle, which is located just beyond aşıklar street.

If you wish, we can take a closer look at the photos.

In the second part of the Artist in Residency program for Sinopale 8, perhaps under the influence of the sculpture “Diogenes”, I found myself composing and writing lyrics. This process turned into a work production with the participation of Ibrahim Hekim, who lives in Sinop, an artist and musician from Sinop. Likewise, for this residency period, Roy Romanov from Istanbul made a special jackets design with nofameunderground label. Now you can see both these jackets and listen to the first and only acoustic concert version of the song “Gölge Etme “, which we have prepared in tribute to Diogenes.

“Gölge Etme” will be released as single in the next spring.

Gölge Etme

You have your wind with me, your arrogance with you
You have your sun with me, your shadow with you

I look around and ask, where’s the human?
My lantern is in my hand, where’s the human?

Don’t bother me, that’s all I ask for you
Leave me with me, I’m so tired

I look around and ask , where’s the human?
My lantern is in my hand, where’s the person?

You have your wind with me, your arrogance with you
You have your sun with me, your shadow with you

I look around and ask, where’s the human?
My lantern is in my hand, where’s the human?

Don’t bother me, that’s all I ask for you
Leave me with me, I’m so tired

I look around and ask , where’s the human?
My lantern is in my hand, where’s the human?
