The Installation piece of Susanne Hopmann revolves around the deception of reality. In a theatrical mise-en-scène, she helps to provide a huge silk curtain to develop a life of its own. Hung up on a complex metal chain construction the delicate fabric is moving slightly as if by an invisible hand. The look along the prestigious curtain onto the mirrored floor reveals a gaping abyss. The artwork deals with the concept of confronting the observer with a “fourth wall”. The impossibility of seeing what is the behind of the curtain, since behind the curtain is the same like in front, enables interrogation of the perception of reality. Thereby the human desire to get to the bottom of understanding is subtly lead ad absurdum.
