Verborgene Bücher

Verborgene Bücher, 2010

Özlem Sulak

Sinopale 4, “Wisdom of Shadow: Art in the Era of Corrupted Information”
Curator: Elke Falat

How do you measure something that is hidden? This would seem to be a contradiction in terms, as the hidden economy is exactly that part of the economy which escapes the purview of our present social measurement apparatus.

‘‘Verborgene Bücher“ (Hidden Books) points out the gesture of covering books. When Özlem Sulak went to school as a child every year the same kind of ritual took place. She covered her books to protect them, and her father simultaneously covered his books as well, but to protect himself, because his books were banned by the Turkish Government. During her residency in Germany heard about banned books in GDR and a similar story of a daughter and father covering books. Ironically the books which are banned in Turkey were allowed in GDR and vice versa.
