Suárez Ruiz deals with the subject of cultural transfer between Europe and Latin America in the age of colonization and post-colonization. Thereby a special attention lies on phenomena of culturalization and hybridisation, the processes of transformation and usurpation of the indigenous through Spanish-catholic culture. The pearl with her inherent exchange and merchandise value played a key role in the circulation of gifts and commodities since the Early Modern Age. Suárez Ruiz blows up the pearl to such a size that it becomes a subject of self-assertion.
