For this specific project, I decided to use photography as a common language to help me understand the people of Sinop. Working here with the Sinop Photography Association, we went through a selection of my slide collection discussing on every image to help me define knowledge or more precisely, its local definition. Looking in group at my found and anonymous images and asking a simple question “Could this be knowledge?” I wanted the group to take position on different issues or subjects, or simply on the content of the images. Knowledge has a very strong but also very abstract meaning, it has numerous definitions. I truly believe that rather using a theoretical definition, people’s position on family, economy, art, photography etc, make more sense to how we perceive the things we recognize, live, love and therefore know.
I would like to thank Melih Görgün, the curators, Işın Önol, the whole Sinopale team, the artists and the amazing volunteers, SİFAD the Sinop Photo Association, Erdoğan Purçlutepe, my great helper Zeynep Uğurlu and The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec for their precious help. I love Sinop!
